Umai Mi recently opened in north San Antonio and is the brainchild of hotshot chef Jason Dady, known for a collection of culinary successes. The modern Asian eatery delivers a wildly vibrant ambiance that is fun and inviting.
Dady creates dishes with flavors that are clean and uncomplicated but still intriguing. Start with the shrimp rolls, which are garlicky and crisp or the deviled eggs spiced with Sriracha. Wash them down with the grilled pineapple-garnished Singapore Sling cocktail. More substantial small plates to consider include Texas quail with sweet corn; umami bomb wagyu sirloin with shitake and bok choy, or chilled Jasmine, smoked trout and pickled peach. For dessert, Thai ice coffee cake with cardamom and vanilla crema is the bomb.
