Crime Stoppers of Houston’s Annual Luncheon Raises Nearly $125,000 to Keep Houston Safe [Event Coverage]

Crime Stoppers of Houston welcomed over 380 guests as they honored and celebrated three “women in public safety,” along with two incredible community partners at the annual Houston’s Heroes Awards Luncheon on May 19, 2016 at Royal Sonesta.

Dave Ward, ABC-13 returned to lend his support as emcee and led the afternoon festivities, which included opening remarks from Crime Stoppers executive director, Rania Mankarious, a series of thanks from chaplain for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Sergeant Shannon Bowdoin, followed by keynote speaker NBC news correspondent, Janet Shamlian, who spoke about her career in journalism, the role media plays in solving crime and her personal tie to Crime Stoppers’ mission for the past 25 years as a reporter covering crime stories.

The following women and corporate partners were honored and recognized as the 2016 Houston Heroes for continuously being on the forefront as citizenry advocates: Lt. Wende Wakeman with The Johnny Klevenhagen Award, Michelle Heinz with The Leon Goldstein Award, Laura Ward with The Leiv Platou Award, Wells Fargo with The Corporate Partnership Award and Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo with The Safe School Award.

The event, which serves as a fundraiser vehicle, raised nearly $125,000 to power the nonprofit’s crime solving tip line and prevention programs.
