Event Spotlight } The San Luis Salute to Mardi Gras

The 19th annual San Luis Salute once again claimed the title of the largest gala ever staged on the island with over 1,600 guests, surpassing the previous year’s record.

The over-the-top evening featured a champagne party at Tilman and Paige Fertitta’s yacht, the Boardwalk, where special guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails.

Entertainment included aerial acrobats and Chinese performers, the famed Quaker City String Band, Sister Sledge and The A-Town A-List Band.

The extravagant evening paid tribute to seven extraordinary individuals who were recently recognized as TIME magazine covers—the UTMB Ebola fighters including Dr. Thomas Geisbert, Dr. Alan Barrett, Dr. Thomas Ksiazek, Dr. James Le Duc and Dr. Scott Weaver who were recognized on December’s cover and NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly, single-mission record setter for a U.S. astronaut, who was recognized on January’s cover.

Notable guests included Neil and Maria Bush, Dean of the Senate, Senator John Whitmire, Senator Larry Taylor and his wife Kerri, Senator Rodney Ellis and his wife Licia, Rachel and Jeff Bagwell, Astronaut Mark Kelly and former Arizona congresswoman Gabby Giffords, and the entire royal court from the Knights of Momus.

The gala remained the place to see and be seen at this year’s Mardi Gras! Galveston celebration.
