Fuente Fuente Opus X

Around 1912, Arturo Fuente started making cigars in the back of his house in West Tampa, Florida, and over the last 100 years the Fuente name has become synonymous with excellent cigars. The company is family-owned—Arturo’s son Carlos Sr., as well as his son, Carlos Jr., are still running the operation.

In the mid-1990s it was said that cigar wrapper tobacco couldn’t be grown in the Dominican Republic. Carlos Fuente Sr. and Jr. accepted the challenge and grew some wrapper tobacco. Not only was this the first wrapper grown in the Dominican Republic, but also it was of exceptional quality. The cigar is a Dominican puro, made entirely of tobacco from the Fuente’s farms in the Dominican Republic, including the wrapper leaf grown at Chateau de la Fuente.

Initially the Opus X was only available on the East Coast, which made them very desirable west of the Mississippi. The distribution still remains limited. Authorized dealers will get a box here, a box there; whatever they order they don’t necessarily receive, and these still sell for a hefty markup due to their rarity. The Fuente Fuente size is a classic corona Gorda, measuring 5 5/8” x 46. The Opus line smokes best with some age as they tend to be very strong when young. I smoked one that was at least 10 years of age and it smoked exceptionally well. It had a sweet leather flavor and had a perfect burn and draw. Fuente Fuente Opus X cigars can be very strong and aggressive when young, but some patient humidor time really benefits this cigar. This is certainly a cigar that anyone passionate about cigars should experience.

The Fuente family also operates The Cigar Family Charitable Foundation in association with the J.C. Newman Family, which benefits children in the Dominican Republic.
