Davidoff of Geneva
“Don’t forget, a cigar is a companion, and a rare one that will never slip away. You can call upon it at any time.” —Zino Davidof
Davidoff Cigars have a long and interesting history, starting with Zino Davidoff, who was born in what is now Ukraine, ending up in Switzerland in 1911 after fleeing political unrest in his homeland. Eventually Davidoff took over his parents’ tobacconist shop in Geneva, which grew into one of the finest shops in the world after World War II.
Davidoff is credited with popularizing the desktop humidor and Cuban Davidoff cigars, which ceased production in 1991. In 1989 Davidoff publicly burned over 100,000 Cuban Davidoff cigars that he judged were not up to his quality standards. The Cuban Davidoff cigars fetch a very high price in vintage cigar auctions. Now the company is owned by the Oettinger Davidoff Group, which produces cigars in the Dominican Republic.
Davidoff Cigars are of the highest quality, and their flagship stores and lounges offer a luxury experience. Every Davidoff Lounge, in addition to offering many other cigar brands, offers the full range of Davidoff cigars, as well as a special cigar just for the individual location. As the company opened their fifth flagship store in Houston (there are three in New York City and one in Atlanta), there is a Davidoff Houston Edition available only in the Houston Lounge.
The cigar has a beautiful Ecuador Connecticut “rojiza” wrapper, which is Spanish for reddish, and it does have a reddish tinge. The cigar smokes like a cigar of this caliber should smoke, which is perfect in every detail, from the razor sharp burn line to the easy, but not too easy, draw.
The flavors are creamy and nutty with some spice, and it’s on the fuller end of medium-bodied to satisfy the local preferences. The Davidoff Houston Edition is a great cigar for a lazy Sunday afternoon, and certainly will satisfy any palate.
