More than 900 guests were in attendance of the sold-out Pratham Houston Gala 2017 which raised more than $1.4 million for Pratham, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of underprivileged children, youth and women in India through education and vocational training programs.
Two remarkable and strong women—who came all the way from India—stole the hearts of the crowd with their powerful presents and stories about Pratham. Sanjana Das, a bright and confident girl who persevered against poverty and all odds, spoke passionately about achieving her full potential and dream of financial independence thanks to Pratham’s vocational training in hospitality management.
Bollywood actress and former Miss Universe, Sushmita Sen, who was the special guest, shared with the audience her rise to fame and translated for Das. Sen also led the highly emotional pledge for the night and reinforced the message that it only costs $25 to educate a child for an entire year.
Emceed by Casey Curry, KTRK-TV meteorologist, and chaired by Pratham president, Ash Shah, and Pratham vice president, Asha Dhume, the glittering evening celebrated 22 years of Pratham’s transformative work and honored Dr. Anupam Ray, Consul General of India.
