When seeking cosmetic procedures, plastic surgeons used to often hear, “I don’t want my husband to know I’m here.” With the rise in men seeking cosmetic procedures, more and more couples are going together for consultation and for surgery.
How to Plan
Most of the time, one will “go first” and let the other take care of them and then trade roles. We advise people to give about two weeks between procedures so their significant other has plenty of time to recover and be ready to take care of them.
Some couples prefer to have their procedures at the same time, so they can take the same “social vacation.” Since both will need someone to care for them, we set our patients up with a service where a nurse can act as a caretaker. The key here is making sure they have help and someone to drive them to follow-up appointments. This option is well-suited for busy couples.
Common Appreciation of Looking and Feeling Their Best
In couples that have procedures at the same time or following one another, we see not only an understanding and support of the other, but a commitment to looking and feeling their best that translates into common ambition and goals. We all know that a healthy self-image contributes greatly to healthy relationships. It is somewhat like working out with a partner—both get to see and feel the benefits, as well as cheer each other on along the way.
Support From One Another
After any surgery, recovery seems to be best when the person has people not only to take care of them, but to support them. Plastic surgery is particularly that way. These are elective procedures that help a person’s self-image. In the immediate postoperative phase, there may be temporary swelling or bruising, so support from a partner and a loving reminder that those things will pass quickly can really make a difference.
Couple plastic surgery can be a great way for a couple to continue to look and feel their best, together.
