Sweet and Savory

The Czech immigration brought plushy warm kolaches to the Lone Star State in the 1800s and turned them into a staple for those living in central Texas. The simple pastry filled with apricot, poppy seed, prune or sweet cheese has evolved into a treat that has been tweaked by our melting pot of cultures.

The Kolache Shoppe in Houston celebrated its 45th anniversary with a fresh new look and menu utilizing local, seasonal ingredients from purveyors such as Bee Wilde Honey and Junior’s Smokehouse.

Look for a mix of sweet and savory kolaches that pay homage to the traditions of the past while enticing new generations of customers. Made-from-scratch hits include lemon cream, ginger citrus marmalade, venison and pork, brisket with jalapeño, and a vegetarian delight with spinach, egg and cheese.
