The Life of a Professional Matchmaker

Personalized online matchmaking might sound like something revolutionary, but Melanie Matcek and Innovative Encounters, LLC is well ahead of the curve. They developed a protocol six years ago, and have made hundreds of successful matches since.

After unsuccessfully navigating the online dating scene, Matcek realized that accountability and human interaction were absent from the process. She decided to take up Cupid’s bow and gain a relationship coach license and certification from the Matchmaking Institute in Manhattan.

Matcek focuses on her clients being personally ready for a relationship and relies on foundational compatibility instead of sending them out into the wild of after-work drinks.

“We spend a lot of time getting to know each other. Then we both know exactly what work needs to be done. I don’t make empty promises; it might not be easy.”

But Matcek firmly believes that there’s someone out there for everyone. “In my heart, I’m still a romantic,” Matcek says.

She devotes many hours to readying her clients to meet that special someone. “You have to be a successful single before you can be a successful couple,” Matcek claims.

Getting clients to relationship readiness isn’t without its mental hurdles; Matcek has to overcome many preconceived ideas.

“Hair color is not a dealbreaker,” she says. “You don’t have to be with a blonde!”

She takes aesthetics into account but also suggests a finding a potential partner based on core values. Even with all of Matcek’s careful calculations, not every match can be Champagne and butterflies.

“I can’t predict chemistry. If I could bottle it, I’d be a millionaire,” she says. Despite the difficulties—which include people mistaking her for an escort service—she warmly affirms that seeing two people in a healthy, long-term relationship after 30 years away from the dating scene is enough to keep her committed for a lifetime.
