Women Gain the Brainy Fat Edge

Men’s ability to burn fat quicker has been the bane of women for centuries, but a new study suggests females might have won the high-fat battle when it comes to brain function.

According to findings reported in the Cell Press journal Cell Reports, male and female brains respond dramatically differently to fatty foods. Researchers studied the effects of mice and learned the male study subjects suffered from reduced cardiac function in a way that female animals in the study did not after eating a high-fat meal.

The variation in brain response is attributed to differences between females and males in estrogen and estrogen-receptor status, which suggests nutritional advice should be more gender-specific concerning fat intake.
